How to Wear Daily SPF – the RIGHT (& Easy) Way

Most of us probably aren’t wearing daily SPF at all (I did an IG poll and ya’ll told me so!) – and those of us that do…I have bad news for you. You’re probably not wearing enough. The proper amount of daily SPF for your face alone is two tablespoons (about the size of a single shot glass). I don’t know about you, but I definitely haven’t been giving my face the shot of SPF it clearly needs.

But like…why not? I think, for me, I’m all about convenience. Yes, I want healthy, glowing, protected skin. But I also want it with little to no effort (lolz). I love SPF products that sink into the skin fast (so I can follow up with makeup quickly), products I can reapply somehow without ruining said makeup, and products that aren’t sticky or fussy.

And I think I’ve finally got this daily SPF routine down to a near perfect science.

My daily SPF must haves (in order of application)

A daytime moisturizer with SPF.

You’ll find this out real quick about my SPF routine – it’s all about layers. And the layers all start with a solid daily moisturizer that includes SPF.

I have a handful of SPF moisturizer faves, the Olay Whip being probably my most used (I even did a recent post about it here). I’m also a big fan of the classic Olay Sun – but that product is really meant to be a true sunscreen vs a moisturizer.

By starting my daily SPF routine with a moisturizing, protecting base, I can confidently know I’m quite literally “covered” from the bare skin up.

A true sunscreen – for me, preferably mineral. Maybe even with a tint.

I used to rely on my favorite CC cream with SPF to be my only sunscreen for the day.

Now that we all know the daily SPF recommendation is two tablespoons, can we all agree our CC creams and tinted moisturizers aren’t cutting it?

Truly if you actually applied the two tablespoons of SPF you need with your CC cream, you’d look absurd. Which is exactly why a “true” sunscreen is a key step to my daily SPF routine.

I’ve got no hate towards chemical sunscreens, but I am also learning to love mineral sunscreens because they’re potentially healthier for our oceans. The issue is I’m picky AF with mineral sunscreens because most leave awful white casts. Lately I’ve been loving the SkinCeuticals mineral tinted sunscreen. The tint is barely there (and there’s really no shade range to speak of because of the barely there tint), but the SPF is legit and I haven’t experienced any white cast.

A CC cream or foundation with SPF.

I’m a huge fan of CC creams and tinted moisturizers. I really only wear a true foundation on more special occasions (the last time being my wedding LOL).

Whether you’re into the CC cream, tinted moisturizer, or foundation life – choose a product with SPF. Again, getting the proper amount of SPF into your daily routine is best done in layers.

A “touch up” SPF mineral powder.

If you have to reapply your sunscreen at the pool, shouldn’t you also have to reapply it during a standard day out and about? But we don’t. Mostly because we don’t think about it and, if you’re wearing makeup like me, it’s a confusing pain to do so.

I struggled with how to reapply SPF over makeup for so long. I initially opted for an SPF touch up spray, but after coming home with sticky, crunchy hair day after day because the spray travels – I ditched it.

I’m now super into mineral powders as not only my makeup setting powder, but also a little touch up powder as my day wears on. Tarte makes a solid touch up powder literally inside a travel brush (but fair warning, it reeks of vanilla).

Recently I’ve gone back to my BareMinerals roots (I worked as an artist for the company in college!) and have been using Mineral Veil with SPF. Maybe it’s just the nostalgia, but I feel like my 19 year old self again with flawless, pore-less, protected skin.

And that, my friends, is my locked and loaded daily SPF routine.
