Reading as a reader is not at all the same as reading as a writer. I’ve been in this chair for over an hour and am on page 33. My normal reading speed would have me closer to page 100. There’s something acutely satisfying about the slower pace. Latching on to each and every word, attempting to understand every craft choice the author made and why they made it. What can we learn from a character by the way the corners of their lips turn up into a grin? What can we learn about a scene without being directly told? Is it that someone’s hair is gleaming in the moonlight? Is it the sound of waves crashing up against the rocks? The smell of salt in the air? What can you learn about the world the story is in and how do we learn it? Did the author tell us? Did they instead place something inside the scene itself to show us? Maybe books are like wine. Most of us drink it. Few of us really taste it. We tip the glass back, allow the liquid to run from teeth to the back of the throat. We swallow. We don’t let it sit in the mouth to wash up against our gums and tastebuds to really understand the flavor. It’s more complex. And you’d have to drink a hell of a lot slower to really catch all the different notes.
