I’m not mad at it.
I love handbags, and I especially love tote bags. After becoming obsessed with the Cuyana Structured Tote, I knew I needed to get my hands on the Everlane Day Market Tote to see if it meets the hype. The Everlane Day Market Tote is beloved by celebrities like Meghan Markle for its versatility and classic, but functional, style. So here’s the real question:
Is the Everlane Day Market Tote worth it?
The Day Market Tote is what I’d consider a large tote bag. This bag measures at 19″ W (top) x 16 1/2″ W (bottom) x 13″ H with a 9 1/2″ handle drop.
The Day Market Tote is made from 100% Italian Leather. This tote is unlined, but does include an interior pocket.
The Everlane Day Market Tote rings in at $175. Everlane claims the traditional retail for a bag like this would be $370. I’m a huge Everlane fan, but transparently I’m not sure how they came to this pricing comparison – from my research, their comparison of their tote to $370 bags is dead wrong and very misleading.
The two bags on the market that I find the most comparable to the Everlane Day Market Tote are the Cuyana Structured Tote and the Madewell Transport Tote. The Cuyana Tote is the highest price point at $195 and the Madewell Tote is the lowest at $168. All this to say – the Everlane Tote isn’t less expensive than “traditional retail” for comparable bags on the market. The language used in their product description is incredibly misleading, essentially positioning their product as less expensive than “comparable” bags. At $175, the Everlane tote pricing falls squarely in the middle of its two most comparable competitors.
The Day Market Tote is incredibly versatile, able to transition perfectly from work to drinks thanks to its classic, streamlined design. The smooth leather (vs a pebbled leather like on the Cuyana Tote) is chic and has more formality to it. Although this isn’t a “formal” bag, it’s definitely an elevated casual piece that is versatile enough to take you from day to night.
The Day Market Tote is popular for the reason the Cuyana Tote and the Neverfull are popular – they’re all insanely functional. I love totes because of their functionality. The Day Market Tote is large enough to fit everything you could possibly need for work, travel, or every day.
The primary con of this tote is the lack of internal organization. With only one internal pocket – and a small one at that – there’s really not a lot of built in organization into the bag. My solve for this is to pack my items in individual bags (an “emergency” bag, a makeup bag, etc).
Unlike a Longchamp Le Pliage, made with a durable nylon material, the Everlane Day Market Tote’s leather is definitely prone to scratching and stains. The Cuyana pebbled leather can help to hide scratches, but a smooth leather like on the Day Market Tote will show wear more easily.
Whether or not a purchase is “worth it” to you is personal – but to me, the Everlane Day Market Tote is definitely worth its price point. At $175, this classic bag doesn’t feel overpriced and definitely doesn’t show signs of going out of style. If you’ve got the cash to invest – I really don’t think you’ll regret adding this bag to your wardrobe!
