How to Craft Perfect Hogwarts Aesthetic

I’m a big Harry Potter fan, but I like to say I’m a more subtle fan. Crafting a Hogwarts aesthetic in my home (or personal style) is something I try to do with finesse, rather than outright souvenirs, replicas, or cosplay.

To each their own, I just like my Harry Potter fandom a little bit more on the subtle side. Like if you’re a true Potterhead you’ll spot it, but the average guest might not.

So from Hogwarts aesthetic outfits to home decor, let’s dive into how to show your Hogwarts pride.

How to craft the perfect Hogwarts aesthetic.

At home.

Add moody accent pieces.

Some fans go totally whole hog and infuse their home with Hogwarts aesthetic furniture (Mirror of Erised, anyone?). I personally prefer to let my Hogwarts home aesthetic take shape through accent pieces instead of larger items.

Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Teen make an entire line of awesome Hogwarts inspired accent pieces, from desk mats to bed linens. Another amazing way to infuse some Hogwarts aesthetic without direct Hogwarts or Harry Potter branding is to choose moody decor items like floor cushions, candlesticks and candelabras, and tarot or occult inspired wall hangings and artwork. I set up my own little “magical” corner of our guest room, complete with chenille floor cushions (these ones, to be exact), a candle, a crystal ball lamp, and a tarot deck.

Opt for magical lighting.

Speaking of my fancy crystal ball lamp – magical looking lighting can really set a mood. Leaning into desk and floor lamps that have a magical or vintage element to them can help give a Hogwarts castle aesthetic vibe. I like to imagine what lamps the students at Hogwarts would’ve been studying under in the library.

Again, Pottery Barn makes a whole host of actual Harry Potter branded lamps, but it’s also easy (and often more affordable) to find lamps that look to be of the Hogwarts vibe that aren’t directly HP branded.

Display your books proudly.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan wanting to get some of that Hogwarts vibe in your home, pick a pretty spot for your books and put them on display. For a real Hogwarts aesthetic, the set of the Hogwarts library books are an awesome set to keep on display.

Wallpaper a room.

Alright, admittedly this tip to achieve peak Hogwarts aesthetic is a little bit aggressive. Wallpapering a room is absolutely a high commitment home decor task. That said, wow are there some amazing Hogwarts and Harry Potter inspired wallpapers out there that I’m personally dying to use in my own home. This Black family tapestry wallpaper has been on my wishlist for ages. MinaLima makes a whole collection of wallpapers, each one more stunning than the next.

In your wardrobe.

I’ll keep it honest up front: I’m personally not into cosplay. I don’t own any Hogwarts house robes and you won’t find me dressing up to the nines as a Weasley on Halloween (although I did don a grey sweater and go as Luna one year). I also don’t own a wand or any other replica items. Personally, I like my wardrobe to be functional for real life. I love showing off my fandom in my wardrobe in more subtle ways, wearing items that are cool, casual, and more suitable for everyday real life rather than feeling like a costume.

I’ve been obsessed lately with my Ravenclaw spirit jersey. Wizarding World actually makes spirit jerseys for all the houses, including a Hogwarts jersey. My husband is in Slytherin and I definitely snagged him a Slytherin jersey. I also nabbed myself one of these customizable Triwizard jerseys – and love it. So yes, these items are definitely blatantly fandom items of clothing – but they’re not costumes. I love cozying up in my Harry Potter and Hogwarts aesthetic gear around the house or out with friends.

Digitally.

Add Hogwarts wallpapers to your devices.

The latest iOS release gave users tons of flexibility when it comes to customizing backgrounds, app icons, colors, etc. When crafting your Hogwarts aesthetic, don’t forget the places you view for hours on end: your screens. I swapped out my desktop wallpaper for a custom Hogwarts and Harry Potter inspired collage I made. My iPad is also totally Hogwarts themed. I love logging into my desktop and iPad now because these spaces now feel super personal, creative, inspirational, and like home – just like Hogwarts.
