How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

I'll be honest - I used to feel almost like, ashamed, that my style wasn't like all the girls I see on Instagram. Everyone seems to have a fresh outfit in every photo. Each outfit is perfectly coordinated and colorful.

And that's just so not me.

I love style, but I also love function. I really hate trends. I also really hate waste. I finally realized that the capsule wardrobe was totally for me and have embraced it ever since.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

Capsule wardrobes are built for mixing and matching. Capsule wardrobes consist of pieces that are neutral, classic, and multi-purpose. The ideal capsule wardrobe can get you from day to drinks to dinner with a simple swap of a shoe or accessory.

What are the advantages of having a capsule wardrobe?

Capsule wardrobes are awesome because they promote function and reduce waste. Because capsule wardrobes aren't trendy, you don't waste your money on items you'll wear once and then toss out. Capsule wardrobes never go out of style and can even save you money in the long run!

How to build a capsule wardrobe.

I have a super realistic approach when it comes to how to build a capsule wardrobe...

Do it one piece at a time.

Seriously. Rebuilding an entire wardrobe is expensive. Like, hundreds, if not thousands of dollars kind of expensive. It's not practical to start entirely from scratch.

I started by buying a few basic tees from Everlane (you can read about my love for the brand here and here). As other pieces got older or went out of style (never again with a capsule wardrobe!), I donated them and replaced them with other staple capsule wardrobe pieces.

Don't be intimidated - it doesn't have to be costly. Just take it one black tee at a time!

The ultimate capsule wardrobe checklist.

I'll bet you already have a good chunk of what you'll need in your closet already. To start, I'd stock up on:

★ Both short and long sleeve tees in white, black, and grey

★ Basic cotton sweaters in black and white

★ A white button down shirt

★ Pairs of blue and black denim, plus a black trouser pant

★ A denim jacket

★ A heavier, classic outerwear piece (like a trench coat or cocoon coat)

Honestly this list could get really big, so I've compiled my favorite capsule wardrobe pieces in the collages below for your easy reference. You can click on any of the items below to shop!
